What is your greatest weakness?

How to answer this behavioral interview question: a complete STAR example, the mistakes interviewers watch for, and the follow-ups you should expect.

A strong STAR example answer

Over-polishing is my honest weakness. Give me a report or a pull request and my instinct is to keep refining long after the extra effort stops changing the outcome. It has cost me: in my first analyst job I burned two extra days formatting a routine dashboard nobody had asked to be beautiful, and it shipped late.

My manager called it out, and she was right. Now every deliverable starts with a written definition of done — the audience, the decision it supports, the accuracy bar — and polish gets a fixed timebox instead of whatever it wants. A colleague reviews a draft while it still feels unfinished to me, which forces the handoff.

The instinct never went away; it just lost its vote on the schedule. Nearly everything I own now ships on or ahead of time, and my turnaround on recurring reports is noticeably faster. The polish still happens. It happens inside the box.

How to structure your own answer

  • Situation: Pick a real weakness, not a disguised strength.
  • Task: Show when it actually cost you something.
  • Action: Describe the concrete system you built to counter it.
  • Result: Give evidence the weakness is shrinking, with a number if possible.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Don't dress up a strength as a weakness — "I work too hard" with no story behind it fools no one.
  • Some weaknesses are disqualifying for the role — poor attention to detail sinks an analyst candidate no matter how well the story is told.
  • Candidates often describe the flaw vividly, then go silent on what they are doing about it.
  • What does "I have no weaknesses" signal? Arrogance, or zero self-awareness.

Follow-up questions to prepare for

Interviewers use follow-ups to verify your story is real. If you get this question in a real interview, expect probes like:

  • What would your current manager say your weakness is?
  • How has this weakness affected your work in the last six months?
  • What is a second weakness you are working on?
